There are wide variety of countertop materials available to make your countertop. At times, the selection can be overwhelming and present a challenge to know exactly what countertop materials to use. What it really comes down to is simply examining your choices, understanding the pros and cons of countertop materials, and how they will fit in your home. Laminates and Wood

Laminate countertop materials are a composite of plastics/synthetics. Laminate is among the cheapest of materials available; it can be cut/molded to just about any shape, comes in a wide range of textures and colors and is relatively durable. Though it is a resilient countertop system (though nothing like a granite countertop system), it can be scratched, gauged, burned and even melted. Once serious damage is done, replacement is really the only reasonable course of action.

Hardwoods as a countertop materials give a kitchen a warm, rich, classy air. Maple and oak are available and definitely set the kitchen apart from more contemporary countertop materials. Other woods are available but can be very pricy, especially in wide surface areas. Wood countertops are easy to clean and take on a polished finish when complete. They can still be damaged and because of the nature of the medium can’t be repaired effectively.

Ceramic Tile

Perhaps the most popular and flexible of the countertop surfaces, ceramic tile seems purpose made as a countertop material. It is durable and easy to maintain, and easy to install. Its affordable and comes in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. One principle advantage that some other countertop materials lack is that it can easily take the heat of a hot pan without affecting the surface of the ceramic tile.

Though a beautiful medium to work in, ceramic tiles as a countertop material does have its down side. Many would like to have custom designs on their ceramic tile, but unless you go direct to the manufacture (such as in Mexico), it can be quite an expensive outlay. Keep in mind too that laying tile can sometimes create an uneven surface on the countertop. Also, since grout is necessary to place the tiles, frequent cleaning is necessary so the grout lines do not darken or blacken and mar the look of the ceramic tiles.

Granite, Soapstone, and Marble

By far one of the most sought after countertop materials is granite. If you are looking for a granite countertop system and have the money to spend, it is among the most beautiful countertop materials available. Granit seems to make every kitchen look beautiful and substantial. Granite is heat resistant, has thousands of colors available, and is durable beyond compare. Though, it is easy to maintain and usually trouble free, some stone types can actually stain.

Another option is man-made or engineered stone. It is similar to granite, comes in even a larger variety of colors than granite but is as easy to clean and maintain. Engineered stone is made from quartz crystals and possess most of the qualities of granite. This includes the expense as well.

Still another stone countertop material option is soapstone. This countertop material is smooth and attractive, usually in a rich deep color. The maintenance on this material is higher as it requires periodic treatment with mineral oil.

Arguably, the richest looking countertop material is marble. When the idea of elegance in stone is conjured, marble is usually what comes to mind. It is EXPENSIVE. It is very resistant to water or heat. Frequently it is used as an accent, such as on an island or a mobile countertop. Unless you enjoy labor in the kitchen, marble may test your patience as it requires attention and upkeep.

Steel and Concrete

Stainless steel countertops were once the prerogative of professional kitchens. Today, given adequate funds and a penchant for the exotic or different, stainless steel countertop materials may be just want you are looking for. Because they are custom made for a given space and design, they are without seems and present one continuous uniform design. Obviously, since it is steel, it is resistant to heat, water, and even children. If you are looking for something rare and different, stainless steel may fill your bill.

The entire world over, granite is a prized material for countertops of all kinds. Even more so than marble, the granite countertop is the prime material for some of the most beautiful kitchens, bathrooms, or even whole homes. It is all at once classic and contemporary. Almost all who can afford it choose it over other materials. Is it any wonder? Each piece is unique; this brings a special design to each and every home where the granite countertop is installed; its almost as if nature produced this particular stone for a particular fixture in a particular home.

The wonder of granite is almost without peer. How to Care for Your Formica Countertop

Introduction

Formica is a brand of amalgamated material chiefly constructed by the Formica Corporation.  Formica is a classic creation made into a heat-resistant, wipe-clean, plastic laminate of paper or fabric with melamine resin. This material has been a popular countertop material for decades. Because of its low cost, wide range of Formica countertop colors, ease of maintenance, and durability, it is often a choice for countertops today.

We will focus on the issue of maintenance of your Formica countertop in this post. By comparison to some countertop materials, Formica countertops are relatively simple to care for.

Cleaning and Care

Though it has relatively high durability compared to the overall cost of the material, the Formica countertop requires attentive care and maintenance to retain its value and appearance.  Luckily, daily care and cleaning is a simple matter of applying soap and water.  As this material can sometimes streak, apply some window cleaner directly to the mix of soap and water or use after to leave a uniform shine to the surface of the countertop. A particular weakness with Formica countertops is that their seams are susceptible to coming apart. Water or other damage can cause them to separate. From there it is simply a matter of time before the problem becomes more serious.

Bottom Line

If you follow these simple guidelines, your Formica countertop will last for years to come. This type of countertop will save you some money, but only if you can commit to caring for it properly. If not, you will just be spending money to replace it later on. If you don’t think you can commit to this type of care and maintenance, you should probably spend some extra money for a more durable type of countertop.

For homeowners, options abound when they are seeking to find that “just right” countertop surface that will satisfy the functional needs of the kitchen as well as the more aesthetic qualities of the homeowners. From a strictly practical point of view, the choice in material is a serious consideration because of maintenance, durability, lifespan, and refurbishment issues. Perhaps the most balanced option that addresses these factors and gives an acceptable return on the dollar is the laminate countertop.

Even though a laminate countertop is considered by some to be a dated material with limited life span, they couldn’t be more wrong. Still other considerations when identifying laminate as your material of choice are those of durability and maintenance. To be frank, nothing can resist endlessly the progress of the years; however, laminate can hold its essential character for decades with the proper care taken to preserve and support its natural strengths. If you have children, you’ll find that the cost to durability factor is more than acceptable.

Repair and Resurfacing

Though it is tough and durable, a laminate countertop is not proof against scratches, dings, or tears. Rather than replace the entire surface, you may be able to resurface for relatively little money, as compared to a full countertop replacement.

As with many aspects of laminate, its ease of installation and maintenance is matched by its ease of repair and resurfacing.  Likewise, the money you save in comparison to repairing other countertop surfacing or material is significant. This cant be over estimated, especially when you consider the simple price comparison of a square foot of each material; the ratio of expense to material is staggering.

As in all things, deliberation in choosing the countertop material right for you is the fundamental consideration in all purchases. For absolute natural beauty, hardly anything can hold a light to marble or granite; however, for the combination of price point, durability, functionality, and aesthetics, laminate is still the king of materials in countertops.

The Bamboo Countertop is Friendly to the Environment

Sadly, the world’s supply of hardwood is very depleted. Bamboo, on the other hand, is a beautiful wood, is remarkably durable, and is a viable countertop alternative. Factually speaking, Bamboo isn’t a wood at all; its actually a form of grass. Installing a bamboo counter top provides a tropical look and an exotic character to your kitchen. Beyond the fact that its exotic and attractive decor, the wood is practical, very hard, strong and a stable building material.

How Strong is Bamboo?

The principle foundation underlying bamboo’s strength is the perfectly straight strand of the grain. It is the only growth on the planet that is completely straight. Bamboo grows without any branches and therefore developes no knots. Bamboo is wonderfully light, but its composition is very stable. Unlike wood, bamboo does not expand or contract nearly as much.

Anyone can make a kitchen countertop out of green Bamboo plankings or, alternatively, you can use unfinished bamboo flooring planks. Not only is bamboo an attractive addition to your home, its great to work with and provides a wonderful sense of accomplishment.

A Job Easily Done!

When you construct the bamboo counter top, make it about two inches think. In contrast, the older bamboo planks with nosing edges were used earlier and not thought to be as attractive. The available colors are natural (a shade of green) and the more familiar caramel shade that most of us are familiar with. With this material you can make the countertop at your home, including sanding and finishing, these are fairly straight forward tasks. Whether you prefer normal urethane or epoxy resin products, each will do the job just as well.

Bamboo is without exception a great choice for a durable countertop surface. Believe it or not, its even harder than maple. The bamboo sheets are think and stable. They also provide the added benefit of being beautiful, and best of all, are a green option to avoid further depletion of a vital resource. Countertops don’t have to be made from wood and they dont have to break the bank! A word of caution: if you are going to be cutting on a bamboo counter top, you will want to plan ahead to insert a separate cutting board into your design plan.

Bamboo Counter Tops are Available in Several Styles

Styles of bamboo counter tops abound. Generally speaking, the sheets are usually provided in two-inch thickness. The basic construction sheet is made as a laminate, that is to say sheets of bamboo are glued together with their grain running at 90 degree angles from the one underneath. This method is thought to be the best for strength and practicality. Constructing the plank in this manner is both strong and flexible, keeping the plank flat, and reducing warping.

So, a bamboo counter top can then be made from solid vertical bamboo “plywood.” The edges are doubled up to make a more attractive and uniform appearance. Use a water based acrylic to coat the surface. In this instance the bamboo plywood is used as the building material because it is environmentally friendly and has a real wood appearance.

When contemplating a bamboo counter top, give due consideration to the grain as the look of the natural is a departure from that of the parquet: know what you like best. The process of making the sheets is done with a non-toxic adhesive. To finish the wood, walnut or mineral oil is used. The wood sealant used can be bee’s wax. This promotes the beauty of the natural wood. The flat grain and vertical grains can be found in the smaller sizes, and the caramelized parquet end grain is found in the larger sizes.
